Project Description

This project will provide students with a unique opportunity to explore the topic of migration through a hands-on, cultural, and socially innovative experience. Students will be exposed to the real problems that African migrants in Hong Kong are facing and will have the chance to design and execute tangible solutions for these issues.

Through African cultural immersive activities and design thinking tools, students will get a solid appreciation of African migration, including the reasons why some Africans migrate to Hong Kong or elsewhere and their lived experiences. Students will learn different perspectives around migration and gain access to some of the migrant communities in Hong Kong during the program which will improve their knowledge about these groups and build empathy for their situations.

The program includes knowledge co-creation and sharing which has always been embedded in the African community.  We also include immersive cultural activities, such as the human library and music workshop, which will introduce students to African culture and get to experience the culture of African migrant communities.

Working in small teams, students will select among four themes to develop a five-month-long project. We have pre-selected some themes based on the African communities in Hong Kong:

  • African Refugees & Asylum Seekers

  • African Local Youths in Hong Kong

  • African Migrant Domestic Workers

  • African International Students

Through the highly effective design thinking process, students will first work together to identify and define a key need, and then ideate and prototype relevant projects that help address it. We will primarily challenge the students to think through the solutions to the problems in line with the relevant pre-selected Sustainable Development Goals framework. See below for relevant SDGs in line with each theme.
