DLAP is a non-profit initiative of Africa Center Hong Kong, designed to
assist African and other ethnic minority youths and low-income Chinese youths in Hong
Kong to achieve their education and career goals.
Despite Hong Kong’s status as a global financial hub and diverse society, the educational
and career prospects for marginalized youth, particularly those from African and other ethnic
minority (EM) backgrounds, remain disproportionately limited. Many African and other ethnic
minority youths, along with low-income Chinese youths in Hong Kong face significant
barriers that hinder their ability to pursue educational and career opportunities. These
include discrimination, language barriers, and a lack of representation in higher education
and the workforce, resulting in a cycle of underachievement and limited socio-economic
mobility. Low-income Chinese youths in Hong Kong experience a unique set of challenges,
due to financial constraints and a lack of access to quality educational opportunities. These
circumstances restrict their ability to break free from the cycle of poverty, perpetuating social
inequalities and limiting the potential for a more inclusive and diverse society.
DLAP provides a skills development program for African, low-income Chinese and EM
youths which empowers them to enter the job-market with confidence and be able to
compete with other youths. Through career workshops in collaboration with key industry
players, youths are provided with career guidance and mentorship, tips for successful
interviews, and CV writing assistance. Furthermore, the program facilitates networking
opportunities which enable youths to meet with potential employers.
A social enterprise dedicated to creating and fostering value interactions between Africans
and non-Africans in Hong Kong since 2019. Innocent Mutanga, the Founder of Africa Center
Hong Kong was a refugee who transformed his life through education and community
support. He founded Africa Center as a way to give back to his community and provide a
platform for continuous cultural exchange, educational and skills programs.
It is a fun and family-friendly space to find heartwarming African food and direct connection to the local African community. The center is for everyone, where they can freely express themselves and their ideas.

The Africa Center is a turning point for the African communities within Hong Kong, and for those who wish to learn and integrate with the community not just within the city, but through out the African diaspora.

I value the “African Literature Book Club” as I value Women’s Day and Black History Month because African literature deserves a spotlight.
